ตอนนี้ที่สหรัฐอเมริกาได้มีกระแสข่าวเกี่ยวกับ Net neutrality ขึ้นมามากมายเลยครับ ทีแรกผมก็ไม่ได้สนใจอะไรมากนัก แต่พอได้มาอ่าน blog ของ Tim Berners-Lee (ผู้ที่เป็นคนคิดค้น world wide web) และบทความหลาย ๆ แห่งเกี่ยวกับเรื่องนี้ รวมถึงของ Prof Lessig ก็ทำให้นึกถึงสิ่งที่กำลังจะเกิดขึ้นในอเมริกา และ ผลกระทบที่จะมาเยือนประเทศไทยครับ

ทีนี้มาทำความเข้าใจเกี่ยวกับ Net neutrality กันก่อน
Net neutrality ตอนนี้กลายเป็นคำศัพท์ที่ใช้เรียกร่างกฏหมายฉบับหนึ่ง ที่กำลังมีการลงผลคะแนน และกำลังนำมาบังคับใช้กับจำนวนและรูปแบบของข้อมูลในการสือสารทางระบบเครืองข่ายอินเตอร์เน็ทในอเมริกา

ก่อนและหลัง Net neutrality
แล้ว Net neutrality หรือ Network neutrality มีผลบังคับยังไงหรอครับ คือว่าตอนนี้ระบบเครื่อข่ายต่าง ๆ ในอเมริกาบางส่วนได้มีกาีรแยกประเภทของข้อมูล ไม่ว่าจะเป็นระบบอินเตอร์ทเน็ท ระบบ VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) ระบบเคเบิลทีวี ระบบภาพยนต์ที่มีการเปิดให้ดาว์นโหลด และระบบต่าง ๆ แยกกันอย่างชัดเจน ทำให้ bandwidth ของแต่ละระบบไม่มีผลซึ่งกันและกัน ผู้ที่จ่ายเงินใช้งานระบบอินเตอร์เน็ทที่ต้องการความเร็วสูงก็จะใช้ network ที่มีประสิทธิภาพและ bandwidth ที่มากกว่าผู้ที่จ่ายเงินน้อยกว่า (DSL vs. Cable) แต่ถ้ากฏหมายฉบับนี้ออกมาบังคับใช้ จะทำให้ทุกระบบมารวมกันนั่นเองครับ เรียกได้ว่าไม่มีการเอาเปรียบครับ ไม่ว่าใคร และ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นประเภทข้อมูลแบบไหนก็ต้องแชร์ระบบ และ bandwidth เทียบเท่ากัน ถ้าผู้ที่อ่านอยู่ยังไม่เห็นภาพ สามารถเข้าไปดูการ์ตูนได้ที่นี่ครับ การ์ตูนนี้แสดงถึงข้อเสียที่ตามมาครับ

ผมขอสรุปในความเห็นของผมว่า ข้อดีคือ net neutrality รัฐบาลอเมริกาทำให้อินเตอร์เน็ทฟรี และ เข้าถึงโดยทั่วกันครับ ข้อเสียคือผู้ที่จ่ายเงินซื้อบริการ เช่น บริการ VoIP ก็จะมาแชร์ระบบเดียวกัน ทำให้้ได้รับบริการที่ไม่มีประสิทธิภาพครับ

ผลกระทบ
ผลกระทบที่เกิดขึ้นโดยตรงก็คือเรื่องของข้อมูลนั่นเองครับ พูดง่าย ๆ ก็คือเรื่อง bandwidth นั่นเอง ระบบใยแก้วนำแสงที่ว่าเร็วก็ยังมีขีดจำกัดใช้มั้ยครับ ทีนี้ถ้ามีข้อมูลมาก ๆ ระบบก็ไม่สามารถรองรับได้อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ แล้วทำให้ส่งผลกระทบตามมาอีกมาก ไม่ว่าจะเป็นในอณาคตที่ความต้องการใช้งานอินเตอร์เน็ทที่มีมากขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ ในขณะนี้ที่ผมอยู่ในอเมริกา ไม่ว่าจะเป็นค่าน้ำ ค่าไฟ ค่าแก็ส ค่าโทรศัพท์มือถือ หรือแม้แต่ค่าเช่าบ้าน ก็ชำระเงินผ่านทางระบบอินเตอร์เน็ทครับ หรือเรื่องของการติดต่อสื่อสาร หลายบริษัทก็เริ่มหันมาใช้อีเมล์ หรือโทรศัพท์แบบ VoIP เพื่อลดต้นทุน ผมรู้จักอยู่หลายคนที่เค้าเปลี่ยนจากโทรศัพท์บ้านแบบธรรมดา (land line) มาใช้แบบ VoIP เนื่องจากที่บ้านมีระบบอินเตอร์เน็ทแบบ Broadband อยู่แล้ว แล้วเค้าก็ยกเลิกบริการโทรศัพท์แบบธรรมดาไปแล้ว

จากการที่ติดตามข่าวเรื่องนี้มาก็มีหลายความคิดที่บอกว่า ถ้าเกิดระบบเต็ม เราก็สามารถขยายระบบได้ ใช่ครับขยายได้ แต่ถ้ามองกลับกัน ถ้าเรามีหลาย ๆ ระบบ ซึ่งแยกกัน ระบบใดระบบหนึ่งเต็ม เราก็ค่อยขยายระบบนั้นไม่ดีกว่าหรอครับ

ข้อมูลจากที่นี่ ได้กล่าวไว้ว่า ทุกวันนี้มีปริมาณของอีเมล์ที่เป็น SPAM มากถึง 80% ของอีเมล์ทั้งหมด ที่ถูกส่งในแต่ละวัน อีกไม่นานครับ SPAM ก็จะเริมเข้ามาในรูปแบบของ video

ผลกระทบทางอ้อมต่ออเมริกา: สั้น ๆ และง่าย ๆ คือ ทางด้านระบบเศรษฐกิจครับ นอกเสียจาก ISP ต่าง ๆ จะร่วมมือและมีระบบรองรับจัดการทีดีครับ แต่ถ้าผมจำไม่ผิด ผู้ที่อยู่เบื่องหลังและสนับสนุน net neutrality คือ ISP รายใหญ่ ๆ ทั้งนั้นนะครับ (ข้อดีของ net neutrality ต่อ ISP คือ เค้าไม่ต้องมาออกแบบ และลงทุน สร้างหลาย ๆ เครื่อข่ายครับ)

ที้นี้มาดูผลกระทบต่อประเทศไทยครับ เว็บไซท์ที่โฮสในอเมริกาย่อมได้รับผลกระทบแน่นอนครับ ระยะเวลาในการเข้าชมเว็บไซท์ช้าลง และอืน ๆ อีกมากครับ

ตอนนี้ผมเชื่อว่าประเทศไทยเรายังเป็นแบบ net neutrality อยู่ครับ เพราะเรายังไม่มีความต้องการในเรื่องของข้อมูลมากนัก แต่หากอณาคตที่ ISP ต่าง ๆ เริ่มมีบริการมากขึ้น ถึงเวลานั้น เราอาจจะมีปัญหาแบบที่อเมริกากำลังถกเถียงกันอยู่ก็ได้ครับ

ข้อความทั้งหมดนี้เป็นแค่ความคิดเห็นผมนะครับ การที่มี net neutrality ออกมาบังคับใช้ก็ย่อมมีทั้ง ผลดีและผลเสียครับ

After I’ve got my MacBook Pro’s battery replaced, the new one is 10 times better than the old one. I’vd got almost 3 hours if running from a battery. The old one was only 2 hours average.

I bought a MacBook Pro back in Feburary. A few week ago, It was randomly shut down while running from a battery (probably 2 minutes after I pull the power adapter out). So today I went to the Apple’s genius bar and see if the Genius can help me out.

The result? It’s a bad battery. My machine is a week 9 build. NOW I’ve got a battey replaced!

I’m neither an expert nor trying to be; but since many people asked me about softwares/applications that they should have in their Mac, so I think it’s a good idea to have a list of some useful applications.

1. Adium (free)
Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, and more. There is an Xtra a.k.a. plugin that you can customize its appearance, sound, etc.. it’s pretty cool.

2. Camino (free)
I know that Safari is nice, has a RSS reader and everything but I think that Camino is Awesome. It’s fast. I also use Camitools for its appearance and profile.

The Camino Project has worked to create a browser that is as functional and elegant as the computers it runs on. The Camino web browser is powerful, secure, and ready to meet the needs of all users while remaining simple and elegant in its design.

3. Stuffit Expander (free)
The Stuffit Expander is a decompress software for .sit .rar .zip .tgz and a lot more. You also can get the Deluxe version for more tools (compress, secure delete, ..) for $79.99

4. Flip4Mac (free)
Flip4Mac play Windows Media files (.wma and .wmv) in QuickTime Player and view Windows Media content on the Internet using a web browser.

5.OmniGraffle (not free)
Don’t say it is MS Visio, because it is ten times better than that!

6. Smultron
It’s free and open-source text editor. I know that Mac OS X come with the TextEditor application. But I like Smultron because of the function that it’s easy to use and just works. I always use it to edit the PHP code.

7. MS Office (MS Word, Powerpoint, Excel, and Entourage a.k.a. Outlook) (Not free, ofcourse)
It’s a must, right?

8.iBackup (free)
If you have an external harddrive. This software is work for you. It can backup your home folder, applications pref, you name it.

9.VirtueDesktops (Free)
Have many desktops in one display and can switch between them, that is what it does. I have one desktop for coding and another for display. Very useful.

10. Cyberduck is a free FTP program. If you don’t know what FTP is, just ignore this software.

11. VLC (free) is very nice media player for MPEG, DivX, etc.. You should have it handy.

12. Colloguy is a free IRC client.

13. Butler (free)

Butler makes it easier for you to perform a wide variety of potentially recurring tasks. Just arrange these tasks in Butler’s fully customizable configuration and assign one or more triggers to a task.

I always use it as a dictionary search engine from the web and as an application lancher.

14. iWorks (not free but not expensive)
Page and Keynote are cool, I use it as my presentation and I got a very good feedback.

15. iStumber is a free wireless discovery tool.

There are some other cool apps like OnyX, MacTheRipper (for DVD-movie backup), Toast Titanium (for DVD, CD, burning), iAlertU (very cool! see my video here), AppZapper (not free but it’s let you completely uninstall any application), and Skype (you know what it is ).

Update: Yes, The MS Word sucks on the Intel Mac. From my experence, it is slow and crash. Fortunately, I did save the file a minute before it crash .

Now the site supports 2 languages posting. So I would say this is an awesome multilingual weblog, photoblog, and beyond.

Update: After I implemented the multiple languages support plugin from Gengo. The posting function act a bit stange, so I decided to uninstall it. It was a good plugin but I think I mess up the code.

Gengo gives the ability to blog in multiple languages using WordPress. It provides an AJAX-based framework to hold language, translation and summary information.
